Une expérience proposée par Frédéric Forte (membre de l’Oulipo) et Greg Saunier (du groupe Deerhoof) à Petit Bureau.

LES ARBRES (a réservoir song)

En mai 2018, Greg Saunier et moi avons passé trois jours aux Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux à concevoir un système de chansons combinatoires, « le Réservoir ». J’écrivais des phrases en français et Greg, après que je lui en eu expliqué le sens et la prononciation, les mettait quasi instantanément en musique, avec juste un crayon et du papier. Nous avons ainsi écrit 44 « jingles » (phrases + mélodies), comme un jeu de chansons en kit, dont certaines furent assemblées dans la foulée.
Plus tard, au printemps 2020, Greg — qui, comme tout le monde, avait beaucoup de temps à passer chez lui — a enregistré les 44 jingles (batterie, orgue et voix). Notre envie, dès le départ, était que d’autres s’emparent du Réservoir pour fabriquer leurs propres chansons. C’est avec cette idée en tête que j’ai envoyé les jingles à mes amies de Petit Bureau, qui ont puisé dedans pour assembler une chanson comme elles l’entendaient. Elles sont revenues vers nous avec un truc bien à elles : les mélodies de Greg et mes phrases transformées en une chanson, « Les arbres », qui est immanquablement du Petit Bureau.
Pour boucler la boucle, il fallait au moins que Greg mixe l’enregistrement… et que je raconte tout ça.

In May 2018, Greg Saunier and I spent three days at the Fine Arts School in Bordeaux designing a system of combinatorial songs that we called the “Reservoir.” I wrote phrases in French, and Greg – after I explained what they meant and how to pronounce them – took his pencil and paper and instantaneously put them to music. We wrote 44 of these “jingles” (phrase + melody) to make a sort of kit for building songs, and used it to make a few of our own right then and there.
Later, in spring of 2020, Greg – stuck at home like the rest of the world – recorded the 44 jingles (drums, organ and voice). Our idea from the start was that others would use the Reservoir to make their own songs. With that in mind, I sent the jingles to my friends over at Petit Bureau, who dipped into them to assemble a song the way they heard it. They came back to us with something entirely their own: Greg’s melodies and my phrases transformed into a song – “Les Arbres” – which is unmistakably Petit Bureau.
To come full circle, Greg had to be the one to mix it… and me to tell the story.
